Patrick Demarchelier

Patrick Demarchelier was born in the Paris suburbs in 1943. He grew up in a poor family with his four brothers, at 17 he received a Kodak camera as a gift from his stepfather, started working part-time in photographic workshops, learned to develop film, retouch negatives, and began shooting friends and weddings. And so began a career one of the most respected photographers in the fashion world.

At the age of 20, he moves to Paris and gets a job at a studio for take photographs for newspapers. After a while Patrick finds a job as an assistant photographer. He takes photos for various magazines. After working for only six months, Demarchelier goes to work in a model agency "Paris Planning Model Agency". Patrick quickly learned by taking a lot of photos every day. He made many mistakes, but it was through them that he understood what he needed to do differently and shot again. Officially Patrick didn't have any education, but that didn't stop him from becoming a famous photographer in the fashion photography industry.

This is the case when success comes not by chance, but as a result of hard work. Demarchelier tried long and hard to do better and better, not thinking about laurels.
"I never looked for success. I worked hard. When you're young, you can't think about success at all. When you reach the top, you try to exceed it. And one day success will find you,"- says the photographer.
In 1975, not knowing English, he goes to America after his beloved, who breaks up with him after all. Here he meets the photographers he has looked up to for years. They are Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton and Irvin Penn.

In time Patrick's photos appeared in fashion publications: Mademoiselle and Glamour. After a while, Patrick began to collaborate with Vogue, and in 1992 he started his long-term collaboration with Harper's Bazaar. The popularity of the French photographer grows with each publication and soon many world brands invite him for their photo sessions. Patrick cooperates with all major fashion houses and shoots companies for Calvin Klein, TAG Heuer, Celine, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Lou is Vuitton, Christian Dior, Chanel and many others.

Patrick Demarchelier is the author of the 2005, 2008 and 2014 Pirelli calendars. He has produced several successful photobooks and he is an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters of France.
Today, the Master continues to work despite his rather old age. His younger son followed in his father's footsteps, who is engaged in photography himself and helps his father in the studio.
