Alexandru Ilea

My name is Alexandru Ilea. I started taking photographs more than 15 years ago. Even though I admire photographers from various fields like documentary, photojournalism and street photography, the focus in my work is on the visual part and capturing decisive moments.

My education comes from self-study and workshops with various internationally recognized photographers.
I discovered Magnum photographer Nikos Economopoulos some years ago through his photographs from Romania which are part of his Balkanlarda book. He has been a great teacher for me and influenced my photographic journey. Seeing his book has definately had impact on how I photograph Romania.

I've been inspired by many other photographers and while it is not an easy task to mention them all, my favorite ones are Henri Cartier Bresson, Sergio Larrain, Josef Koudelka, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Alex Webb, Harry Gruyaert, Gueorgui Pinkhassov to name a few.

Taking photographs is for me a mindful experience. I become an observer who doesn't have expectations on the outcome and doesn't try to influence the context.

Photography is about sharpening the senses and being anchored in the present. I like to take long walks before photographing just to clear my mind. To quote Sogyal Rinpoche, "If the mind is not contrived, it is spontaneously blissful, just as water, when not agitated, it is by nature transparent and clear."
As a traveller and photographer I have learned to develop curiosity and explore every place that I visit whether it belongs to a distant country or to my home country.

Through these images I want to take the viewer to a journey into Romania and hope to inspire the same feeling of wonder that I felt when I visited those places.
"If the mind is not contrived, it is spontaneously blissful, just as water, when not agitated, it is by nature transparent and clear."
